At the beginning of their experience as freelance translators, everybody is anxious how to deal with this issue. It is very simple...
First, get yourself an Invoice template. At the bottom of this page there a a standard template included with Microsoft Excel. You can go ahead and search the web for more templates. There are thousand version out there. You can even design your own. Or if you use an accounting sofware it will have integrated templates as well.
Normaly all the data that should be included in an Invoice is stated in the Purchase Order (PO) that you may receive from your client. It is a good practise to request one if the client does not sent it. Normally, the PO specifies what data your client wants you to include in the Invoice.
Few standard details will be:
Name and address of your client plus tax details (if available)
date of invoice issue
their project numbers
service provided(translation/proofreading/etc)
word counts
total cost
